The new palace was built over the site of an old armoury, after King Rama V had it demolished. The new palace was intended as a gift to the first\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0645ad;background: none\" title=\"Crown Prince of Thailand\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crown_Prince_of_Thailand\">Crown Prince of Siam<\/a>, Prince\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0645ad;background: none\" title=\"Vajirunhis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vajirunhis\">Maha Vajirunhis<\/a>. It was originally named\u00a0<i>Phra Thinang Phanumart Chamroon<\/i>\u00a0(\u0e1e\u0e23\u0e30\u0e17\u0e35\u0e48\u0e19\u0e31\u0e48\u0e07\u0e20\u0e32\u0e19\u0e38\u0e21\u0e32\u0e28\u0e08\u0e33\u0e23\u0e39\u0e0d). However, before the construction was finished the prince died of typhoid at the age of 16. Once completed the palace was handed to the next heir, Crown Prince Maha Vajiravudh, who ascended the throne in 1910 as Rama VI. He later gave the palace its present name.<sup id=\"cite_ref-104\" class=\"reference\" style=\"line-height: 1;font-size: 11.2px\"><a style=\"color: #0645ad;background: none\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Palace#cite_note-104\">[104]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Watcharothai_181_105-0\" class=\"reference\" style=\"line-height: 1;font-size: 11.2px\"><a style=\"color: #0645ad;background: none\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Palace#cite_note-Watcharothai_181-105\">[105]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.5em 0px;color: #202122;font-family: sans-serif;font-size: 14px\">Under the supervision of foreign architects, namely the German C. Sandreczki, the Boromphiman Throne Hall became the most modern building within the Grand Palace; it was also the first to be designed to accommodate carriages and motorcars.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Noobanjong_(2003)_162_106-0\" class=\"reference\" style=\"line-height: 1;font-size: 11.2px\"><a style=\"color: #0645ad;background: none\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Palace#cite_note-Noobanjong_(2003)_162-106\">[106]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The exterior walls are embellished with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0645ad;background: none\" title=\"Pilaster\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pilaster\">pilasters<\/a>\u00a0and elaborate plaster designs. The triangular and semi-circular pediments are decorated with stuccoed floral motifs. The palace&#8217;s distinctive\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0645ad;background: none\" title=\"Mansard roof\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mansard_roof\">Mansard roof<\/a>\u00a0is covered in dark grey slate tiles. King Rama VII stayed at the palace for a few nights before his coronation in 1925, while King\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0645ad;background: none\" title=\"Ananda Mahidol\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ananda_Mahidol\">Ananda Mahidol<\/a>\u00a0(Rama VIII) made the palace his main place of residence upon his return to Thailand from Switzerland in December 1945. He lived in this palace with his younger brother Prince Bhumibol Adulyadej (later King Rama IX) and his mother Princess\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0645ad;background: none\" title=\"Srinagarindra\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Srinagarindra\">Sri Sangwan<\/a>.
