Aussie soap fans of a certain age will recognise this hangout from Home and Away, which was originally run by Bobby Simpson and Ailsa Stewart. The diner became a popular attraction for locals and tourists until 2000 when it burnt down due to a chip pan fire (the new diner just isn’t the same). Though it went through a refurb or two in later years, it’s featured here in all its original 80s glory.
The previously empty unit next door was briefly used as a Youth Centre in early-to-mid 1989, but I have now added Summer Bay’s second-most popular hangout – the Surf Club! Since the two were never part of the same building in the show, screen accuracy for the Surf Club went out the window. I decided to go for something more original that (hopefully) captures the feel of the many looks the Surf Club had over the years.
